About the project

An off grid radio installation that collects, stores and broadcasts the stories gentrification is erasing from Nijmegen.

Stoorzender, from Dutch stoor (interference) and zender (transmitter): the word for pirate stations that disrupt official signals. The stories come from the margins: queer communities, squatter collectives and nightlife subcultures that are increasingly pushed out of the city’s visible and audible landscape.

Visitors meet the work through sound and light, two immaterial mediums that can occupy space without owning it. In collaboration with sound designer Ruben Kotkamp and DJ and producer Darko Esser (Tripeo), I composed a spatial, four channel soundscape combining field recordings, personal testimonies and ambient interference.

More than a work of design, Stoorzenders is a method of resistance: a techno anarchist gesture that reclaims the tools of control and retools them for autonomy, collective memory and radical care.
